More than 2,200 fishermen in 279 boats took to the sea from the Rameswaram fishing landing in Ramanathapuram district on Wednesday with permission from the Fisheries Department.

In this case, it is reported that the Sri Lankan Navy in 5 patrol boats chased away the fishermen who were fishing in the Kachchathivu-Mannar sea area on Wednesday midnight.

Then the steamboat belonging to Wellington belonging to Rameswaram Thangachimadam was captured by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Janathan (45), Anthony (38), Prabhu (43), Donbosko (55), Arogya Devin (31), Vellichami (51), Subpaiah (52), Arogya Geniston (25) and Stelin (30) who were in the boat were arrested.

The Sri Lankan Navy took the arrested fishermen and the impounded boats to the Mannar Naval Camp.

A case was registered against 9 fishermen for fishing across the border and they were produced in Mannar court on Thursday. The judge ordered to keep them in court custody till August 25. After this, all 9 fishermen were imprisoned in Vavuniya jail.

While 11 Rameswaram fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy last week, the arrest of 9 more has created fear among fishermen in the area.

The Rameswaram Fishermen's Association has demanded that the central and Tamil Nadu governments should immediately release the 9 arrested Rameswaram fishermen and the impounded boats.
